15 years ago, this enigmatic graphic novel performed its mental autopsy on Batman and his enemies, and in doing so set both its creators on the road to greatness.

I bought this many, many (I'm old) years ago from the comic book shop that used to be in Bexleyheath, Kent. The name of the store escapes me, but I wiled away much of my youth in there... at least until I discovered other vices. Ahem. This book is one of the most disturbing 'mainstream' graphic novels you'll ever read and, thanks to Grant Morrison's astonishing writing, is an essential piece of Batman lore. This hardback edition is particularly lovely.Buy it, and buy it for your friends.

One of those happy occasions when writer and artist seem to complement each other perfectly, this book is one of the greatest in the Batman range. In one of his first tries at writing one of D.C's "big characters" Morrison nails the Dark Knight perfectly, showing him to be just as insane as those he fights again (personally my favourite interpretation of the character, though everyone has there preferences.) Dave Mckean, probably most famous for his covers on "Sandman" delivers truly great art, and his interpretations of Arkham's inmates (particuarly the Joker) are a dark joy to behold. Both a history of Arkham and a tale of Batman, this was when Morrison showed just how good he can be. Great stuff.
