Joseph Campbell was an expert in the field of mythology. A myth is not a lie, rather it is a metaphorical story which deals with truths about which it is difficult to speak or write in a literal way. A myth might be concerned with the world, society, the individual or one's own mind. This eye-opening book looks at myths, legends and fairy stories and derives from them one journey - the hero's journey, which is the story of our lives as they could best be lived.

Campbell's seminal work on mythology in which traditional folk tales, fairy stories and myths and legends from around the world are compared to illustrate their similarities. Each essentially relating the same hero myth of the journey through life, in the gaze of the eternal cosmos. Heavy going at times but well worth the effort, particularly if seeking answers about life, the universe and personal beliefs. A major influence on George Lucas' Star Wars saga.
