Tom Foster, WATERSTONE'S EDINBURGH WEST EN
28 April 2009
As with most of Hogarth's drawing guides, this is utterly excellent. What may seem an ambitiously specific subject matter is explored to an unprecedented level of depth, revealing myriad complexities that, when examined, justify the scrutiny under which they are placed. Of all the installments in the series, this is the one whose images most haunt the reader and the deftness with which Hogarth practices his craft proves both breath-taking and inspirational. If there is one thing a good drawing guide must do it is demonstrate the true possibilites of the techniques it exs; to exemplify that which it examines in order that it may engender a craving for equally fine output from the reader. This volume does this more consistently than any other I have seen.
