Entertaining and informative
16 December 2009
An entertaining and informative read that showed me lots of fun ways to make money that I never knew existed. Okay, so the explorer angle is a bit offbeat - perhaps I won't start collecting shrunken heads, penny farthings or celebrity hair to make my fortune. But there were plenty of other practical ideas that seem a whole lot more enjoyable than reading the financial pages of the newspaper or studying a building society savings book. Will certainly appeal to the child in you that yearns nostalgically for all those lost comics and old classics like Meccano, Lego, Scalextric and trusty rocking horse. Also plenty of fun adult vices, beer, wine and 'seaside sauce'. Could sort out that tricky gift idea for Christmas.

Fascinating and fun - full of quirks
12 December 2009
What a quirky and fascinating book this is. It's far more than the predictable stuff of stamp and coin collecting. Much of this book is about collecting seriously weird, and in some cases utterly freaky things from stuffed animals to shrunken heads.
I certainly learned some new words. Such as 'pizzle'. (That's a bull's penis used as a sheath to cover Victorian walking sticks, apparently).
Toby Walne's writing has its own rather eccentric style but it all adds to the fun of this charming, bizarre book. Hugely recommended!

Perfect for my dad!
07 December 2009
What a lovely book! Brought it for my dad's birthday and he loved it. Full of curious collectables that are bound to appeal to those nostalgic members of the family who have never quite grown up. Should make a great stock filler for all those who like to reminisce about Meccano, Action Man, Scalextric and the like, as belonging to the best years of their life. Sadly though, the book also states how such vintage toys must be kept under lock and key - if only my brother and I had known that 20 years ago!!

A fine book.

A simple guide which is sure to inspire those who find post office savings accounts a tediously slow way to make money but fear stocks and shares offer a gamble stacked far too much in favour of the men in pin-striped suits. The author dips into the wonderful world of Victorian explorer investments with a suitably quirky and well-illustrated period-style book. Even those without the daring-do bravery to go fortune hunting for shrunken heads or enjoy the thrills of riding penny farthings should have some fun. Sitting down with a bottle of vintage wine and first-edition book are more sedate options also explored

Unexpected top-tip for Xmas presents!
07 December 2009
I had a quick flick through this when I was looking for a Xmas present for my difficult-to-buy-for male relatives. Found myself chuckling as I read it and ended up buying it for myself as well as all of them! It is a finance book that entertains as well as informs. Why investment books need to be rather dull affairs with lots of dry statistics I do not know. A fun read but with plenty of practical advice on original money making ideas. Now looking forward to making my fortune on celebrity hair and pedigree pigs!!!!
