Me Before You

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Lovely but slightly predictable
15 May 2013
I first thought I wouldn't enjoy it, seeming too 'rom-com' for me. Then a quarter of the way in started to enjoy it much more with the story changing and becoming more meaty. But when nearing the end I already knew what was going to happen. A pleasant read and lovely story but could have been much better.
P.S. Felt really cruel for not crying but now feel much better seeing other people hadn't.

lovely book
10 March 2013
Deserves all the wonderful reviews. You may think its a hard subject to read about but the characters are so engaging that you can't help but want to know what happens to them. Of course very thought provoking but the humour lightens what is essentially a love story.

Not what I expected
21 February 2013
Everybody told me that this book would make me cry, but they were also very insistent that I should read it. So although I thought the subject of the book sounded a little depressing, i began reading with the kind of feeling that something bad was about to happen at any turn. I found myself hooked into a wonderful story, filled with extremely well developed characters and entirely beautiful writing. I read The Last Letter From Your Lover by Jojo Moyes last year and found it pretty hard going, but this was a much easier read because I found myself instantly involved in the story and wanting to read on.
The majority of this book is told in the first person by main character Lou. A character just a couple of years younger than me who is struggling to find work so that she might pay her parents the rent they so badly need in order to support her and her sister, who has the fabulously awesome name-Katrina! However, as the book progresses, we hear the story told from other characters in the book. Quadriplegic Will, Will's mother, Will's father, Will's nurse and Lou's sister Katrina. I thought this was a really effective way to break up the story and this author timed the change in voice perfectly throughout the novel. When things started to get particularly heavy or particularly bleak, another character would pipe up with their point of view, it really was captivating.
At first I thought that I might not like the characters in this book, on the surface Lou can seem like a silly little girl who can't cope with what is going on in the world, but once you get to know her, she is actually an incredibly strong young woman who can do anything once she puts her mind to it. Her family seem, at first, to be controlling and selfish, but again once you get to know them, they want what is best for their children and grandchild and will do anything they can to support their daughters. Will seems like your typical arrogant city man at the start of this novel, and when we first meet him following the accident, he seems self-centred and not at all likeable, but as we read about his interactions with Louisa, his nurse and his mother, his sense of humour and strength totally comes through too. I think that way Jojo Moyes has developed these characters is also very clever.
I will admit that sometimes I had to step away from the storyline because things do get really deep and a little hard to take at times, but I actually didn't cry and thought the whole thing was really beautifully written. Although I didn't cry in the end, I can see why other people have done, especially if they have devoured the book in one sitting as it was very tempting to do... All in all I enjoyed this book more than I thought i would. The entire storyline was well written and the ending, an excellent conclusion to a thoroughly meaty tale!

Could do better
09 February 2013
It is just a romance story and the cover is suitably pink.
Too much mundane every day stuff as filler. Patronising where well-educated middle class helps ignorant and aimless "working" class. Skims the more valuable topic of euthenasia.
No tension, no surprises.

I absolutely adored this book: unputdownable. Although it's marketed as a romance story, it is so much more than that. It's well written, with full characters, and although it's in first person there's none of that boring internal monologue which is in so many Chick Lit books these days.
The story starts with Louisa Clark losing her job, and scraping the barrel of jobs offered by the Job Centre. Evetually she is hired for a job as a carer for Will Traynor who became a quadraplegic after a road accident two years previously. Will's quality of life is very far removed from what it was before his accident and he is generally grouchy towards everybody. When Lou enters his life they both change for good.
This is a highly emotional story, and I definitely wouldn't recommend reading the last few chapters in public spaces. Highly recommended.

engrossingly lovable but thought provoking read
03 September 2012
I loved this book and the way it was written. It was easy to see all the sides of the story, well set out by jojo. I was so engrossed in the characters feelings and could hardly read at some points due to the tears streaming down my cheeks. A must read.

Me Before You is the best book I have ever read, offering the reader unique experiences which make you question life yet also appreciate its value. Extremely funny, yet also emotionally challenging, not only on the characters, but the reader, this book lays out the foundations of life, compromise, adventure and love. Truly Inspirational.

Good read, but disappointing ending.

It was really well written, but this story for me was quite ruined but ending. You can't write story about value of person and than just decide that ability to control your life in 100% is more important that persone you love...

Good read, disappointing end.

Extremly disappointing ending. You can't convincing people trough whole book to idea that life is great instead of all bad things and that someone else can replace your lost dreams and than just change your mind and end everything in opposite way.

The Eldwick GIN Club, (Girls into Novels), read this in June 12.
For the first time in our 7year history as a group we unanimously agreed that this was an amazing read, thought provoking, sensitive to the subject with beautifully written characters. This is a book that stays with you long after the last page. Thank you Jojo for writing a book that enriches life.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. <3
02 July 2012
I'll start by saying it's not the soppy romantic drivel you expect by looking at the cover. Don't get me wrong there was romance but Moyes wrote it in a way that doesn't make you feel nauseous. Although I personally felt like it took too long to get to the main plot, once it did I couldn't put it down. Nice, quick, casual read; I finished it in 2 days.
