The Secret Lake

When Stella and her younger brother, Tom, move to their new London home, they become mystified by the disappearances of Harry, their elderly neighbour’s small dog. Where does he go? And why does he keep reappearing wet-through? Their quest to solve the riddle over the summer holidays leads to a boat buried under a grassy mound – and a tunnel that takes them to a secret lake.

A lovely story that I couldn't put down.
13 March 2012
As a child I loved mystery stories and now I have children I am sharing my childhood favourites with them as well as discovering new children's authors. I really enjoyed reading The Secret Lake to my children and have to confess to finishing the book after they had gone to bed as I couldn't wait to find out what happened at the end of the book!
The Secret Lake is well written story and I could really picture Stella, Tom and the garden as I was reading it.
Whilst the book is a combination of time travel and adventure it also shows real friendship between the characters. The unexpected twist at the end of the story was a perfect end to a brilliant book. My sons who are 10 and 6 both loved the story and couldn't wait to hear the next chapter.
An added bonus was the chapters were quite short and this makes it a perfect book for younger readers to read themselves.

Brilliant mystery
10 March 2012
I thought this was a brilliant book and I really liked the characters, especially old Mrs Moon. The children in the book saw a dog disappear and then reappear soaking wet and decided to follow the dog to see where he went. What they found was a tunnel and at the other end of the tunnel was a lake, a rowing boat and a big mystery.
At the end of the book the children have solved the mystery of the lake but the ending was a little bit sad.
The book was interesting and I liked that it was a mystery that the children solved at the end. I read it in my bed at night and it took me a few nights as it was so good. I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

a magical book with a exciting twist
23 February 2012
as i sat reading this book, i felt i was in the garden watching the adventure unfold, from the start i couldn't wait to read the next page. The main characters reminded me of my childhood and the 'adventures' we used to embark on, and how in a group we would always have that little bit more courage.
I felt the way the author moved between past and present was done so well, with the descriptions of the clothes houses, and the way the children were treated i could really feel the different lives. The ending had a lovely twist that in a way was both happy and sad, which left me still thinking about the book well after i had finished reading. As an adult i thought it was a beautiful story, which i will be passing on to my young niece to read as i am sure she will enjoy the book as much as i have

Great book, full of adventure and mystery!!
19 February 2012
As a child my favourite books were always the adventure stories, I loved to read about all the exciting things the children got up to and where their escapades took them. Reading this book as an adult brought back lots of happy childhood memories, as it is full of adventure along with a touch of mystery and suspense. I really love this book, in fact I couldn’t put it down, it is such a page turner!
The book is very well written, it keeps you hooked, wondering what is going to happen at the end and is finished with a fascinating twist, you just didn’t quite expect. The story is set in a lovely garden which is described so well by the author, that you can just imagine what a beautiful and stunning place it must be. The two main characters a brother and a sister, have such personalities that I think any child reading this could relate to them, making this book suitable for both boys and girls.
Whether you are an adult or a child I thoroughly recommend that you read this book, as I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did!!
